In response to MLMM Sunday writing prompt: Take a headline and turn it into a poem
Also in response to: Fandango’s One Word Challenge: sweat
I chose the headline from the Tuscaloosa News:
MILLENNIALS HAVE WORSE HEALTH THAN GENERATION X
Millennials, what is this I see?
Your health is worse than Generation X. I wonder, how could that possibly be?
They say that overall my generation feels pretty swell,
And that yours feels worse and doesn’t eat well.
You also suffer from more anxiety and depression,
Well, at least that is the impression!
I’m trying hard to comprehend your situation if I dare,
Perhaps it’s all the computer usage and social media,
That leads to your isolation and despair.
You are more sedentary, that is true,
Which may cause higher rates of chronic illnesses for you!
Our generation drank from hoses,
And we wiped our own noses.
We were told to go outside and play,
We ran around our neighborhoods every day!
No one ever asked how we were feeling,
We climbed trees and bumped our heads until we were reeling!
This is definitely cause for concern that much is true,
So listen to the generation that precedes you.
Put the device down more often,
Before you end up too early in the coffin.
Go outside, breathe fresh air,
Lie down in the grass without a care.
You don’t have to succumb to life’s pressures and ills,
Exercise, break a sweat, engage with others and just chill!

great write. how fun!

I have definitely noticed that my daughter plays outside less than I did as a child. Though to be fair if I had had the Internet, more than 2 television channels, and a slew of game consoles I might have spent more time inside myself! When she was younger I restricted her tv/computer time to evenings after dinner so that most of those precious daylight hours she would have to spend running around and entertaining herself. So much of children’s lives now seem to exist in the virtual realm. In general society needs a lot of work. I am also a Generation X kid. Our generation did massive damage to the environment for the sake of greed and I definitely think there is something seriously messed up about the 16 hour work week, no paternity/maternity leave. How can people not be stressed when in order to barely scrap by they have to work themselves into a early grave? Most of my millennial friends have to live in a home with 8 other people all working just so they can eat Ramen noodles everyday.

Good points! Each generation has its own problems, that’s for sure. I think my kids also had way more demands placed on them academically, which led to their anxiety levels. Thanks for reading and for the comments. Great prompt!

That is so true! Many of the younger generation never go out and make their own entertainment or get fresh air.

For sure! And they all have a phone in their hands at all times. Even my generation spends more time staring at their phones than engaging in conversation with the people around them!
